Hunting Backpacks: What to Look For
Hunting backpacks need to be really strong to carry all the gear you need to bring with you. These packs have either an external or an internal frame. A sturdy frame gives the backpack the support you need. The bags with an internal frame tend to be lighter so you can bring more equipment for your hunting expedition. Along with food and clothes, you need to carry the actual hunting gear, such as a bow and arrows or a rifle. The pack has to have a special place for this gear. You also need to bring a sleeping bag, even if you are staying in a cabin.
Backpacks for hunting should have the following features:
- Wider shoulder straps that are curved and padded. This feature prevents the straps from cutting into your shoulders under a heavy load.
- Chest strap. Backpacks that have a chest strap prevent the back pack gear from pulling your shoulders back when you tighten the chest strap.
- Hip Belt. The hip belt helps to lighten the strain on your back by pulling the load to the center of gravity. Although you may not think so, in a back pack that is used for hunting, the hip belts are necessary. The best one is one that circles the lumbar and not just side straps hanging from the pack. You also need to have a hip belt with soft, broad padding so that it will not rest on any pressure points making the hike to the hunting grounds very painful.
- Pockets. You need to have pockets both inside and outside the pack . These bag pockets are useful for storing your hunting equipment securely.
- Hydration Pocket. Whenever you are hiking, whether you are hunting or not, you need to have water so you don't become dehydrated or have a dry mouth and lips. This pocket holds the container of water and has a hole where you can insert a straw.
- Equipment straps. You need to have bungee cords or equipment straps on the hunting gear to enable you to attach other equipment that you might need to bring along, such as a sleeping bag or a small stove for camping.
